Another question about NEW YORK but please answer i need some hints and tips?
How much will these things typically cost in NY?
A standard 10 min taxi ride?
A nice american breakfast?
Lunch of a sandwich crisps etc (also where to buy lunch? we have marks and spencer here)
A good dinner? (somewhere nice but not overly posh?)
To go up the empire state building?
Visit ground zero?
Go to the rockerfella center?
Also what is American highstreet fashion like? In the uk we have topshop/River island etc? Is there anything similar in the US?
What are the main cosmetic/drug stores in the US, like in the UK we have boots and superdrug?
What would be an average amount of money to take for 5 days in NY…we want to visit a few places, eat out (not to extravagantly) and do some shopping (not really in designer places though) ?
Just any hints tips or places to visit woluld be great??
we went from UK in May for my 40th for 7 days, we took about 3 grand, but we went to shop, so if you weren’t that bothered about shopping then you could get away with just under 2 grand. I’ll try and answer some of your questions as a tourist sees things.
We went onto attractionticketsdirect.com here and booked 5 attraction ticket from them, which allowed us entry to rockerfella centre, empire state building, we used another one for a trip to woodbury commons shopping mall which has gap, etc, we liked that card and it was easy to use. you just go into the foyer of madamme tuessauds and redeem how many you want for what you want it for, we only redeemed 1 attraction ticket for all 3 open top hop on hop off bus tours, the uptown tour takes you to harlem, we didn’t hop off this tour as we found nothing of any interest for us, you pass the museum from night at the museum, then the downtown tour which is where you’ll [pass the ground zero, wall st where you need to see the wall st bull, china town where you get every fake under the sun, little italy, etc, this is an enjoyable tour and we hopped off at several points and it took up a lot of the morning, then the nighttime tour which takes you to Brooklyn at night and you look across at Manhattan skyline in the dark and it’s amazing, it’s quite a famous scene, it is in Spice girls 2 becomes 1 video, but that is an amazing tour in my opinion. we used the last attraction ticket for madamme tuessauds but we thought it was rubbish, so wouldn’t recommend it.we booked seperately online for statue of liberty as if you buy tickets on the day you don’t get inside the body cos you need police checks done in advance.
We ate breakfast every morning in Grand central terminal, downstairs has a vast array of eating places but we are so fussy that we ate bagels from a place that sold them downstairs, they are the best I have ever tasted. we were too tired to eat to be honest, we would have that breakfast at about 9ish and then be on the go, and we found we didn’t eat at all during the day as we were so busy, and by the time you remember to eat it is just a pizza that we grabbed or McDonald’s, however we did speak to people there that ate at Gordon Ramsey’s place, but food isn’t our thing on holiday.
The shops on 5th avenue are quite high end, they have Juicy couture, and all the armani’s, etc, that’s as you walk up towards central park, if you are about 42nd street and 5th avenue, there is a HUGE H&M there, and walking towards empire state building there are a few cheaper shops, but nothing like Top shop or river island. there are shops called American Outfitters or american eagle or something like that and they have some nice things, but I think if your looking for stuff like River island it’ll be more expensive there, there is a large shop in Times square and I can’t remember what it’s called sorry but it is right at a corner with lots of different coloured tops in the window and I thought it was lovely shop but very very expensive. you are better off going to Woodbury commons for bargains, that’s where we spent most of our money (look it up on internet)
chemists there are same as Florida and places in America, there is walgreens and duane reade, both are big chemists, but they sell EVERYTHING else, I wouldn’t describe either of them like our boots or superdrug, they are far larger for a start and the layout is wierd in comparrison to ours. I needed nurofen and hunted high and low for them, but the pharmasist side of these shops are hidden away upstairs. they sell towels, chocolate, tops, the lot in these shops, so they are good for that. 1 piece of advice take your own shampoo because it is rubbish stuff there and quite expensive too, and so is deodrant too, we go to florida quite often and find the stuff there quite similar to ours here (tresemme shampoo, soft and gentle, etc) but in New york it is non branded stuff and wierd and expensive, so take your own.
I’m sorry I told we didn’t eat out, but my husband reminded me there that we went to hard rock cafe and TGIF bith in Times square, people will give you money off vouchers in the street before you go in, use them, as the food is lovely in both places and they really make you feel very welcome in both these places.
if going to a show, wait until the day of the show and wait in the queue for the big red tickets booth in the middle of times square,as you’ll get them at a fraction of the price, all the more money to spend on shopping.
I can’t answer the taxi ride I’m afraid, I have been in America loads of times and have never rode a yellow cab. don’t be afraid to use the subway, we used it a fair bit on the saturday, because you will notice a big differenc ebetween the weekday and weekend in new york, especially in grand central terminal, we went in every morning as i said for breakfast and it was mobbed and then it was my birthday on the saturday and we were going onto statue of liberty so needed to get subway, we thought it was closed. It was because the city is full of commuters and they a;ll go home for the weekend.
I remember the name of the shop on the corner, it is called LOFT, there is also a ZARA on 42nd street too, accross the road from Bryant park and the H&M store, this is on the corner of 42nd st and 5th ave.
